First frost of the season. It's still autumn meteorologically until the winter equinox on 21st dec, but hey, i was surprised to see frost on the ground this morning. Ground temperatures fell below 0 C. Cool. But the odd thing is it always warms up nicely in the day. The diurnal temperature variation is so big. It was 0 C when I went out at 8 am and it's now 18 C at 3pm. So you dress up for winter in the morning. End up being overdressed in the afternoon, because it's now t-shirt and jeans weather.

In the meantime, i need to complete my paper and then start studying for finals. Also, i need to start saving up for a new laptop (which i intend to get when steve jobs start showcasing them). Mine's an antiquated machine, running with 128 Mb RAM on a 600 MHz G3 processor. It is after all 3 years old. But it has been a trustworthy companion.

Berries. In culinary terms, berries are essentially small fleshy fruits that we eat, that very often have the word berry in their names. Examples include strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. Yet, botanically, berries mean something quite specific. And many berries we call berries aren't berries. And many other fruits that aren't thought to be berries are actually berries.

So what is a berry? A berry is a uniformly fleshy fruit. lacking a hard thick shell or a leathery rind, with no papery or stony parts present inside the fruit. Going by that classification, strawberries aren't berries. Look at a strawberry the next time you eat one. Cut it open. Compare it with a grape - a true berry. How are they different?

Brinjals, bell peppers and bananas have one thing in common. They are berries.

Surprised? Yes i was. But it makes sense. After all many things we call vegetables are actually fruits. We have such arbitrary classifications some times, that it's difficult to unlearn them. Corn kernels are technically fruits. Sunflower seeds are technically fruits. And the lovely pineapple is a multiple fruit.

Bottom line: all of them are very yummy. Ok. Minus brinjals.

I shall have to disagree - pineapple's got to be the worst thing that happened to Man. Only redeeming point is that it's a bromeliad. Brinjals are nice - provided they're cooked properly. But they do have an odd texture. Oh I'm surprised bananas are berries. I suppose it's the technical vs layman thingy again. Like layman obsessive isn't psychiatric obsessive.
