This post is about music. You listen to different songs when you are in different locations and in different moods. They complement each other. It's surprising how a song can trigger so much memories - takes you back to when you first listened to it, or when you listened to it under a certain circumstance. It can draw out positive or negative emotions/thoughts, such is the power of associative memory. Quite sure this term exists in psychology.
So here's my personal preference and thoughts: when/where to listen to Coldplay?
They have 2 studio albums: the first of which is 'Parachutes'.
I feel that the songs on this album would best be listened to when you are in a room alone, with the lights dimmed low. Or you are walking down an endless stretch of land - be it the beach/field, the main criteria here is relative non-motion and bleakness. The bleaker the landscape/surroundings, the better.
Album 2 is 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'.
This is an anthemic album - with lots of great songs that can be belted out, and blasted. Great to listen to when you are on the edge of a cliff, overlooking a canyon. Criteria here would be openness of the landscape/ infinite possibilities. You should be feeling out of this world.
Upcoming album 3 is 'X & Y'.
Based on the live tracks i have heard from the concerts (5 of them), I feel that this album is taking yet another direction away from the previous 2. The sensation of motion is even greater on this one. You need to be either belting across the plains on a train, looking out, or lying flat out on the field, under the bright starry night sky - taking in everything. It's about absorbing and embracing the world.
Right. I'm a crankpot. Who listens to music like that? But if you do as i say, you'll find a different sort of enjoyment to your favourite songs.

Ah, best I can do is room ambience for songs ... Cold Water! But no .. no mp3 player, so unfortunately if the song calls for an outdoorsey setting I'd have to drive out and sit in the car.
