Watched a movie by Jean Pierre Jeunet yesterday, the director who made 'Amelie'. This time, the subject is changed from Montmarte, Paris to the trenches of France during the first world war. "Un Long Dimanche de Fiancailles" (A Very Long Engagement) sees Audrey Tautou back in action. It's a good film, stylistic elements of 'Amelie' appear, but the themes dealt with are different. There's still a tinge of morality issues but i guess despair is dealt with pretty well.
5 soldiers serving in the French army were court-martialled for treason, as they each inflicted injuries to themselves, in order to get sent back from the war. They were found guilty and were sentenced to be released onto no man's land, the area bounding the French and German trenches, left to their own devices. A few years later, one of the soldier's fiancee, Mathilde, firmly refuses to believe that her fiance has dead. She would know it if he did... (that's where some of the magical moments in the movie appear). So she sets off on a series of investigations to find out wat really happened that day at the trench 'Bingo Crepuscule'.
Well, it's always good to watch a good film.
