Jemaa el Fna

Jemaa el Fna - one of the highlights of Marrakech, Morocco. Went there in December 2003, and Morocco is instantly unforgettable. Right from the start, when we boarded the ferry to get from Spain to Morocco, crossing the Mediterranean Sea. The ferry, upon nearing Tangier, Morocco, kept going round in circles, refusing to berth. Wonder why too. Waited for the train to Fes in this brand new station in Tangier, marbled floors. The train from Tangier to Sidi Kacem was fine, and we had to change at Sidi Kacem for Fes. Horrors of all horrors. We crossed the platform at 2 in the morning and got on this train, so packed with people and bags... that stands out so starkly from the journeys of europe. Ended up sleeping while sitting up. Got into Fes at around 4 in the morning, was pestered by a local, climbed up the hills, took pics of sunrise. Forward a few days, and we got into Marrakech. Loads of foodstalls at night in Jemaa el Fna, snake charmers, aphrodisiac sellers, henna painters, orange juice for sale.. a city of wonders. And the unforgettable icecream parlour, off Jemaa el Fna, where we had scoops after scoops of icecream. Dirt cheap.
