A Full Circle
I applied to uni, originally wanting to read physiology. I put that down as my major, No commitments, of course. After the first year, in which it went horribly wrong in physiology, i realised that physio was extremely not my cup of tea, thank you. Electrophysiology was so loved by the department.. the NERNST equation.. of all horrors. So, i gladly veered away from physiology, and plonked myself at the 2 extreme ends of biology: biochem and ecology, in the 2nd year. Lo and behold, i quie enjoyed ecology until the 2nd half... again.. not my cup of tea. AND off it goes, into oblivion... so, in my 3rd year, where i am now, reading Plant Sciences as a major, this is for the americans... which know it as a major, , us cantabrigians (that's a noun describing residents of cambridge) call it our tripos! OK, seems too posh as well.
Now, i was convinced that out of the 4 module options i had for the 1st term, i was VERY sure which 2 of the 4 i was going to take. Right up to today morning. Which is the 1st day of lectures. For clarity, here are the modules in their full glory.
M1. Frontiers in Plant-Microbe Interactions
M2. Plant Metabolism
M3. Dynamics, History and Future of Vegetation
M4. Transport and Signal Transduction
I was going to do M1 and M2. And decided to sit in for 1 M4 lecture today. Moments into the lecture.. i decided that M1 was such a horrible idea... epidemiology?? Golly.. i'm not in the most bit enthused about that. The problems set out in M4 were more interesting: tackling drought-tolerance in plants.. improving crop quality etc etc... Now you 1st world people who have ample to eat.. stop protesting against GM-crops for the sake of protesting... think about the obvious benefits it will bring to the 3rd world nations who don't enough get any food.... Crux of the entire story is: M4 involves loads of electrophysiology.. patch clamp.. Nernst equation.. biophysics stuff.. now.. that's what i call coming a full circle. You can run, you can hide, but it comes back with a vengeance and bites you. So now, i've convinced myself that i'm going to do M2 and M4. Lovely choice! Unpredictable times.
